Sphexishness
Brief Description
Sphexishness is a metacognitive thinking tool coined by philosopher Daniel Dennett to highlight our unique ability to reflect on and change our behavioral patterns, thus breaking the loop of determinism that governs certain creatures like the wasp species known as Sphex. This tool emphasizes the significance of free will in human cognition.
Detailed Description
Dennett's Sphexishness is named after the Sphex wasp, which during its hunting ritual, digs a burrow, lays an egg, and paralyzes a grasshopper to place inside the burrow. However, the wasp has a peculiar habit: it returns to check if it has properly placed the grasshopper in the burrow, but on its way back, it gets distracted by other stimuli, such as shadows or a leaf moving. In this loop of checking and getting distracted, the wasp never lays the egg and fails to complete its task. This behavior is known as Sphexishness.
In contrast to the wasp, humans can reflect on their patterns of behavior (metacognition) and change them. For instance, when faced with procrastination, a human might recognize it as a problematic loop (similar to the wasp's behavior), identify the root cause, and apply solutions to break free from that loop. This self-awareness and ability to modify our actions sets humans apart from creatures like the Sphex wasp.
Sphexishness underscores the importance of introspection in human cognition, as it enables us to understand our behavioral patterns and exercise free will to change them if necessary. Understanding this concept can lead to personal growth and improved decision-making skills.
Exercise / How to Apply
Step 1: Identify a repetitive pattern or loop in your life that you'd like to break. This could be procrastination, poor time management, unhealthy habits, etc.
Step 2: Reflect on the reasons behind this pattern and try to understand its underlying causes. Why do you find yourself stuck in this loop? Is there an emotional trigger or a habit that has formed over time?
Step 3: Develop strategies to break free from this loop by changing your behavioral patterns. For example, if procrastination is the issue, you might set deadlines for tasks, eliminate distractions, or use productivity tools.
Step 4: Implement these strategies and observe the results. If the strategies are not effective, refine them based on your observations and continue to experiment until you find a solution that works.
Suggestion for Creating an App
An app based on Sphexishness could be designed as follows:
Features:
-
Loop Identification: The user can input various aspects of their life, such as work, health, and relationships, to identify repetitive patterns or loops that they'd like to break.
-
Motivation Boosters: To help users stay motivated, the app could offer positive reinforcement through encouraging messages, success stories, and tips from experts.
-
Reflection Journal: Users can maintain a journal to record their thoughts, feelings, and experiences related to the identified loop, helping them gain insight into its underlying causes.
-
Strategies Library: The app could provide a library of strategies for breaking free from various loops, such as procrastination, bad habits, and poor time management. Users can choose and apply these strategies to their personal situations.
-
Progress Tracker: Users can track their progress over time, measuring the effectiveness of different strategies and making adjustments as needed.
Gamification:
To make the app more engaging, gamify the experience by awarding points for completed tasks, milestones reached, and self-reflection entries. Offer badges for achieving specific goals or breaking free from identified loops. This will motivate users to continuously improve their lives and break free from unwanted behavioral patterns.
